Three Dog Bakery eyes expansion

Kansas City-based Three Dog Bakery is expanding in more ways than one.

The all-natural dog treat and food business recently became Global Food Safety Initiative-certified, which opens multiple doors. Three Dog Bakery obtained the certification on its first try, a feat not many companies accomplish, President Scott Ragan said.

Pet safety is a growing concern in the U.S., and pet retailers want assurance that the edible products they carry meet first-class safety and quality standards, he said. That’s where the GFSI certification comes into play.

Thanks to that, Three Dog Bakery is expanding distribution and increasing production volume by 40 to 50 percent at its Kansas City production facility, 1843 N. Topping Ave.

Starting in the summer, Three Dog Bakery will add shifts and begin baking in the evenings and weekends to keep pace with growth. The Topping facility employs 40 to 50 full- and part-time employees. Three Dog Bakery is determining how many new employees to hire to meet the uptick in production , Ragan said.
