Missouri Begins I-70 Expansion: Paving the Way for Infrastructure Excellence

The expansion of Interstate 70 (I-70) in Missouri, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the state, is officially underway. The estimated $2.8 billion investment in Missouri’s critical east-west corridor will widen the highway to three lanes each way, aiming to enhance transportation efficiency, boost economic growth, and improve safety for travelers. 

I-70 supports the transportation of around 100 million tons of freight annually. The project, led by the Missouri Department of Transportation, will enhance its capacity, ensuring that the highway can continue to meet the growing demands of freight transportation while also improving safety and reducing congestion for all users.

The I-70 expansion project involves several key components:

  • Widening the Highway: Adding additional lanes in both directions from Blue Springs to Wentzville to increase capacity and reduce congestion.
  • Upgrading Interchanges: Modernizing interchanges to improve traffic flow and safety.
  • Bridge Replacements and Repairs: Replacing aging bridges and repairing existing structures to ensure they meet current safety standards.
  • Technology Integration: Incorporating intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to manage traffic more effectively and provide real-time information to drivers.
