Missouri’s New Governor Freezes All New Regulations

ColumbiaJeffersonCity_RegionSiteIncentives_SubSectionGraphic_218x218Yesterday, Missouri’s new governor Eric Greitens signed an executive order putting a temporary freeze on all new government regulations. Gov. Greitens broadcast the signing on Facebook Live surrounded by boxes and folders, which contained printed copies of the actual rules and regulations that businesses have to deal with.

“I said during the campaign that our number one priority was more jobs and higher pay for the people of Missouri,” Governor Greitens said during the Facebook Live broadcast. “Burdensome regulations actually hurt businesses and they hurt working families across the state of Missouri.”

In addition to the freeze on new regulations the executive order also requires state agencies to review existing regulations and affirm in a report that: they are necessary; that their benefits outweigh the costs; that their effectiveness can be measured; that less restrictive alternatives have been considered; and to ensure the regulations don’t “unduly and adversely affect Missouri citizens or customers of the State, or the competitive environment in Missouri.” These reports will also be required for any regulations proposed in the future.
