BASF to buy Becker Underwood for $1 billion

BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, is buying Iowa seed treatment company Becker Underwood from Norwest Equity Partners for $1.02 billion. German-based BASF is making the purchase to boost its farming pesticides division, Reuters reports. In spring 2011, analysts had speculated that BASF eyed Monsanto as a takeover target, but sources also told Reuters BASF had no current plans to buy the St. Louis-based seed tech company.
