#MoreMissouri 2020: Demand for Missouri Next-Gen Batteries Surges; Investment Grows

Missouri delivers more than you expect. In Missouri, you’ll find more of everything. More global industries. More diverse assets. More affordability. More innovation. All month long, Missouri Partnership is celebrating “more” by taking a look back at some of Missouri’s biggest stories in economic development from 2020. Today, we’re checking out ZAF Energy Systems’ growth in Missouri.

In May, ZAF executives announced they had received $22 million from institutional and strategic investors to accelerate the commercialization of their NiZn battery in the data storage, industrial equipment, transportation, healthcare and defense markets. The company manufactures the next-gen batteries in Joplin, Missouri.

Demand for ZAF’s NiZn technology as a replacement for lead-acid batteries in key market segments continues to grow. ZAF’s NiZn batteries last more than twice as long as lead acid batteries and yield twice the energy density of lead-acid batteries at less than a quarter of the cost, making them smaller, lighter and less expensive. ZAF’s NiZn batteries are recyclable and non-toxic to the environment.
