Danforth scientists open algae farm for biofuels research

Dozens of strains of algae are growing at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in a new algae farm that’s powered by 30 kilowatts of electricity.

Twelve custom growth chambers, which house flasks of green algae, went online earlier this year at a cost of $160,000 to design and build. Using a unique computer interface, scientists can control various elements necessary for algae growth, including light, temperature and carbon dioxide.
