5 reasons Missouri is right for energy solutions

Missouri is fortunate to be located in the U.S. wind corridor and also to share the photovoltaic resources of the American West. Forests and farmland throughout the state provide ample resources for biomass and alternative fuels. Research and degree programs at Missouri universities are leading the way for these new energy solutions.

1. Missouri's aggressive renewable portfolio standard and customer rebates ensure a growing market.

  • Missouri strives to make solar projects affordable and painless through a net metering act passed in 2007.
  • Missouri solar installations have increased from 101kw in 2009 to over 85 MW in 2014. That’s a more than 84,000% increase in five years.
  • Missouri is one of only a few states to have a carve-out for solar written into its RPS, and it is the only state to have passed such legislation by an overwhelming voter margin.

2. Missouri's central location and extensive transportation system ensure efficient access to customers and suppliers.

  • Missouri is located within 600 miles of 53% of U.S. manufacturing establishments and 50% of all U.S. households.
  • Missouri's transportation network can reduce shipping costs for utility-scale solar projects, which can account for two percent of the overall project cost.
  • The top 20 states for existing wind capacity include four of Missouri's neighboring states. Missouri and surrounding states account for more than 25% of the U.S. total current wind power capacity (U.S. Department of Energy).

3. Missouri has a large, highly educated, and low-cost workforce.

4. Missouri's education and research centers support innovation and growth.

5. Missouri's low-cost, pro-business environment helps companies prosper.

  • Missouri is tax friendly! Missouri ranks in the top 10 for corporate tax index and property tax index (Tax Foundation, 2015).
  • Missouri has remained in the top ten of the list of pro-business states for five years (Pollina Corporate Real Estate).
  • Missouri is a top 10 state for regulatory environment according to Forbes.
